EMERITUS STATUS
Emeritus is defined as: one who is retired from or, for medical reasons, is no longer employed in a dental office or dental assisting position; but who is permitted to retain, as an honorary title, the rank or credential last held.

DANB will issue Emeritus status to DANB Certificants who meet specific requirements and who contact DANB in writing requesting such status. After status is awarded, recipient must use certification acronym followed by Emeritus for identification; i.e., Sue Smith, CDA-Emeritus. DANB Emeritus status does not require CDE credits or payment of renewal fees.

DANB Certified Assistants (CDA, COA, COMSA, CDPMA) may apply for Emeritus status if they have maintained continuous, current DANB Certification for four of the five years immediately preceding application and have:

  • Become totally and permanently disabled; or
  • Retired from the field of dentistry/dental assisting at the age of 60 years or older; or
  • Retired from the field of dentistry/dental assisting with 35 years of continuous (without any breaks) DANB Certification.
Acceptable documentation to qualify for disability status:
The DANB Certificant must provide a letter from the his/her physician on office letterhead stating that the DANB Certificant is physically and permanently unable to perform any duties required.

Acceptable documentation to qualify for retirement status:
The DANB Certificant must submit two letters stating that he/she has retired and the date of retirement:
  • A signed letter from the DANB Certificant requesting Emeritus status; and one or both of the following:
  • A signed letter from the DANB Certificant’s employer on employer letterhead; or
  • The DANB Certificant must provide proof of receiving Social Security benefits

No matter how Emeritus Certification is earned, Emeritus Certificants must use the Emeritus designation, i.e., Sue Smith, CDA-Emeritus.

For more information on earning the Emeritus Status, contact DANB's Assistant Director, Recertification, at 1-800-FOR-DANB x445, or send an e-mail to DANB's Recertification Department.

Reinstatement of Current DANB Certificant Status from Emeritus Status
To regain current DANB Certification status, for example if one wishes to return to work, the Emeritus Certificant must either reinstate or re-test depending on the time passed since the Emeritus designation was earned.

A DANB CDA-Emeritus or COA-Emeritus who achieved Emeritus status within the past four to 30 months can reinstate her/his DANB CDA and/or COA Certification to become currently DANB Certified if the individual does the following:

  • Pays administrative reinstatement fee ($125), and
  • Provides proof of required CDE (12 credits per year for each year of Emeritus status) and current DANB-accepted CPR; or
  • Pays for and passes the PDEP module (General Chairside for CDA-Emeritus, Orthodontic Assisting for COA-Emeritus) and provides proof of DANB-accepted CPR.

After the criteria above have been met, the Emeritus Certificant will be reinstated as a current, continuous DANB Certificant (CDA or COA) with the same original DANB Certification number and original Certification date.

Since there are currently no PDEP modules to reinstate the CDPMA or COMSA credentials, these Emeritus Certificants can only reinstate with discontinuous Certification, earning a new DANB Certification number and a new DANB Certification date.

For more information on reinstating DANB Certification after holding Emeritus status, contact DANB's Assistant Director, Recertification, at 1-800-FOR-DANB x445, or send an e-mail to DANB's Recertification Department.
